Bedside Table Finished! Are Concrete Pots The Future?!

Weekly Update

It has been a while since I gave an update. That is because I am back at school now, and moving in and getting situated took a lot more effort than I was expecting. I don’t expect these updates to come out as frequently, and I definitely don’t think that they will be as full of content as I would like, but I will try to do my best to work on this while also balancing out my homework, classes, tests, clubs, and everything else.

Injection Mold Machine

I left the injection mold machine at home, so I won’t be able to make much major progress on this project. I have done some minor 3D modeling to try and figure out how my mold system will work and attach to the machine that I built this summer. I will also be in a club this semester working on recycling plastic bottles into filament, which I have a lot of experience with, and sorta has a bit of crossover with my injection mold machine plastic recycling.

Concrete Pots

I have put a lot of thought into this project over the past couple of weeks. The thing that I am caught up on is where a good place to mix concrete is. I need to reach out to my school’s makerspaces to see if they would allow it. I hesitate because I think that they might say no because I will be selling things. But at the same time, I won’t really be using any of their resources other than the space, so maybe they will be fine with it. It would be asking a lot, though, because I would also need a decent sized spot for storage while I let the concrete set. I think that the next person I should reach out to is the owner of Sector 67, I think potentially I could get a good deal/ student discount or even free use of the space, because of my relationship, but the space is sorta far away, I would need to drive. I think worst case scenario, I do all the work in my apartment, or outside my apartment, which I think would be a terrible mess and could potentially get me in trouble.

With all that being said, I don’t really think I am ready for all that yet. Maybe I can reach out to the makerspace soon, but first, I really need to figure out my setup. I have done a bunch of 3D modeling of different pot designs, but I have not designed or printed any molds. I think right now I should stick with the 3d printed molds, but once I start selling, I think I should look into creating some silicone molds. I think that the silicone molds might last a bit longer and maybe create a better product. I would need to test it.

Bedside Table Personal Project

I was able to finish my Bedside table before leaving to go back to school, so that felt good. I am really happy with how it turned out, too. Here is a photo:
